If you’ve heard of the Dollar General Penny List, then you may not know there’s an even better way to find pennies! Sound too good to be true? It’s not! Dollar General pennies dozens of products each week. But, when they’re going to remodel a store hundreds of items could penny! Therefore, you need to know how to spot a store that is planning to remodel. So, you can get pennies at a remodel! We’ll show you how!
But first, bookmark our Dollar General Penny Item Master List! And come back each week to see what’s new.
How to Find a Dollar General Remodel
Firstly, look for 50% off signs indicating markdowns throughout the store. I’m not talking one or two sales signs, I’m talking noticeably a lot of major markdowns on core items (not seasonal). Obviously, if your store says it will be closed on XX date for a remodel, then get ready! You can also ask the manager if you suspect your store is planning a facelift. If you know it’s coming because of signage or a manager, you can skip these steps and show up on Sunday morning. Be sure to read our tips on how to prepare for a DG remodel below, to make the most of this experience!
Secondly, another way to investigate whether your store may remodel is to add items from the typical remodel list to your Dollar General app, and watch for the price to go half off on Friday. Keep in mind, Friday is the day this usually happens when a store is going to remodel the following week. Then, the items will penny on Sunday morning.
TYPICAL Dollar General REMODEL Sale LIST:
There are some typical items to look for that MIGHT indicate your store plans to remodel. A typical remodel list might include things that have been spotted at 50% in a potential-remodel whereas they’re full price in all other stores. Take note of those items in your store and add them to your app to watch! If you don’t know which items your store is marking down by the signage in your store, then here are some tips.
The typical remodel markdowns include frozen food and cold items, staples such as salt, pepper grinders, sugar, spices, etc., and other things that they cannot easily store while remodeling. Also, things that will expire. Each store will vary, and no single list exists that will totally determine if a store is remodeling. Other products we’ve seen – that you should stalk in your app – include clothing such as Realtree, home decor such as rugs, door mats, storage tubs, bins and drawers, lamp shades, BBQ charcoal, Betty Crocker kitchen wares, cleaning supplies such as ammonia, Fabuloso, etc., kitty litter, toilet paper, toothpaste, toys such as Matchbox cars, sheets, towels, pot holders, and picture frames.
A few examples to look for:
(feel free to scan these with the DG app!)
- True Living Tank Top Hanger Organizer UPC 430000946785
- True Living essentials silver picture frame 5×7 UPC 642828204323
- McCormick Sea Salt Grinder UPC 052100746029
- McCormick Pepper Grinder UPC 052100030265
- Comfort Bay Silk Touch Full/Queen throw UPC 43000021934
- Hanes boys comfort soft tactless briefs 4 pk UPC 738994354266
These are some items you can add to your app and watch if you see lots of 50% off signs throughout your store. But, your best bet is to pay attention to what your specific store has marked down. Keep in mind, not everything will be marked down ahead of time. So, when you get to the remodel sale, SCAN EVERYTHING!
Stalk the App
Thirdly, keep watching those items in your app, because if they go to a penny early Sunday morning (check before the store opens at approximately 2 am), then your store is likely remodeling! And, all these items could be available for just a penny each! Some items may only go to 90% off, or not even that far (but let’s face it, that’s pretty sweet too!)
How to Prepare for Penny Shopping at a DG Remodel Sale
Fourthly, prepare to go to the store! We suggest that you bring big black trash bags to haul stuff in. It’ll make it easier to gather your things. Recruit help! Highly suggested that you bring a friend or two to help, because there could be a lot! You’ll want to scan everything and that’s a lot of work. You’ll want to be quick, because there may be other penny shoppers to compete with. (Of course, please keep it nice!) Be sure your phone is charged, and bring along a power pack (battery) so your phone doesn’t die.
Fifthly, get to the store a few hours before they open and be ready for when it opens! Take this time to connect to the Dollar General WiFi and make sure your app is working. Important: Set your store to the store you are at!
Once You’re There, How to Find Pennies
Sixthly, scan EVERYTHING using the Dollar General app. It’s free on the App store and Google Play. Make sure to sign in first, and connect to the store’s wifi. And, be sure your store in the app is set to the correct store that you’re in.
SCAN EVERYTHING! While you’ve stalked products in the app that were marked down the Friday before, not everything is always marked. So, you may not realize more items have pennied!
Finally, items that are clearanced, or a penny, will be priced that way until the store closes to remodel. However, you should try to get there early on Sunday morning! Because, all the good stuff will sell out quickly!
DG Remodel Penny Tips
Keep in mind: employees may pull all the penny items before the store opens. In that case, you will not find carts full of products for a penny. But, don’t be upset. Because, they’re doing their job! Please don’t get mad at them. Always be kind and patient.
Also, penny shopping will bring a lot of tired shoppers together, so please try to remain calm and be nice! Other penny shoppers may clear shelves, and that is 100% what they should do. If they don’t take all of the penny items, then employees are supposed to immediately remove them from the shelves anyway. So, if they don’t take them all, nobody will get them! Just because they took everything doesn’t mean they took it from you. Don’t blame them and don’t act out! Follow our steps above and you’ll have a much better chance of getting pennies at a remodel.
One last note: some penny shoppers have found merchandise in dumpsters. While this may be enticing, we urge you to check your local laws to make sure that taking things from dumpsters is allowed before diving in. Because, some areas consider it stealing! Of course, always be safe!
Why Penny Items Clearance?
Penny Items at Dollar General have either been hard to sell, are discontinued products or after Holiday close outs. Maybe in some areas a certain product doesn’t sell. For example, DG will mark them down in steps, all the way down to 90% off clearance. Then, if there’s any left, they discount them to a penny. Often, manufacturers will stop making a certain product. Maybe it’s Tide and they want to change the scent. Or, maybe they change the size of the product. Either way, they’ll discontinue the old version. And as a result, they’ll close them out all the way down to the 1¢ sale.
Of course, Holiday close-outs are popular in most stores. For example, after Valentine’s Day, stores close out chocolates and candy, and other holiday-themed items at a step-down sale discount. In other words, they’ll start at maybe 50% off, and after a set amount of time they’ll increase the discount to 75% off and so on. It’s at the end of those mark-downs that the penny items happen!
The reason DG discounts all the way to a penny is to alert sales associates that it’s time to pull the merchandise from store shelves, to be donated to places such as Goodwill, or to be destroyed.
And finally, the little-known penny tip: look for stores that are going to remodel!
Why Do DG Stores Remodel?
Dollar Gen stores will periodically close stores for a few weeks to remodel them. These improvements might include new freezer sections, coolers, and maybe even new flooring, shelving, and sometimes different products. When certain items don’t sell well at a given location, DG might realize this and decide not to sell that type of item there anymore. For example, if clothes don’t sell well at a specific store, then they may have a big sale on clothes before they remodel. Because, they don’t plan to sell clothes there anymore. In that case, clothes might be marked down to 90% off or more. And in some cases, they may even mark them all the way down to one penny!
Dollar General stores sometimes remodel into a totally different type of Dollar General. For example, they might become what’s known as an NCI store which is a home store and carries more interior decorating and decor items. Or, they may remodel and become a DGX store which is more like a convenience store with very little home decor or clothing.
Note: a remodel does not mean everything will go on clearance, and it certainly doesn’t mean everything will penny! Sometimes nothing will penny!
